The name for this neighborhood was chosen by William P. Argentine, who lived in Kansas City from 1878 to 1906 and named not only his home but the district after himself. He served as a colonel in the state militia and built several buildings in the area including a brickyard and an opera house/theater called Argentine Hall. Argentine first started as a quiet farming community that mainly sold produce. The town was known for its apple cider but became more popular when the streetcar was built in the 1890s.

After World War II, many soldiers were coming home and getting married making an increase in the population of this neighborhood. It was the perfect place to start a family because of its quiet atmosphere and close proximity to downtown. However, by the 1960s and 1970s, many people began moving to other areas such as Overland Park and Johnson County. Today, Argentine is seen as a stable neighborhood with an older population; it is one of the few remaining neighborhoods that feature large, wooden houses.
