Armourdale, Kansas City, KS

Armourdale is a neighborhood in Kansas City, KS, and is bordered by 39th St. to the north, the Missouri River to the east, Front St. to the south, and Woodland Ave. to the west.

The neighborhood is named for its former designation as an Armour satellite town of Kansas City, MO. Started in 1912 by Joseph B. Miller, Armourdale was designed as a residential area, with the two entrances designated to help control traffic into and out of Armourdale.

Most residents work in manual labor or technical jobs, and many residents live below the federal poverty level.

Armourdale is famous for its high-quality nightlife, especially in the River Market District.

History

The neighborhood is mostly residential in nature, but there are some businesses located along Front Street near the Missouri River.

During much of its history, Armourdale saw little investment or improvement from either Kansas City or Jackson County. The neighborhood lacked sidewalks until about 2003 and had few houses with garages.

The area was also home to large industrial buildings, including the Liggett-Myers Tobacco Company and several rail structures and railroad switching yards (active until 1979). While these structures were demolished over time, remnants of this past still exist in the form of abandoned streets and sidewalks which run through the urban landscape.

Liggett-Myers vacated the site in 1979, and beginning in 1994 it would become a large film studio.

Today, the neighborhood is seeing substantial investment and improvement from local and county groups. Many of the old railroad tracks have been removed or paved over, and the neighborhood is receiving its first sidewalks (funded by a 2003 bond issue passed by Jackson County voters).

Education

The neighborhood is served by Armourdale Elementary School, which is part of the Kansas City, KS Public Schools system.

The school’s attendance boundary includes both the Armourdale and Pleasant Valley neighborhoods.

Neighborhood parks are located at Mill Cove Park (42nd St.) & Riverside Park (42nd St.). Some of these features include the artificial turf, bike/pedestrian path, playground, and picnic area.

Notable Places

Armourdale has lots of notable places including the Armourdale Boathouse and the Armourdale Beacon.

It also has a basketball court, and many people love to go there and play at night.

People also like to fish along the riverfront.

There are several churches located in the neighborhood including St. James United Methodist Church (established 1872), First Presbyterian Church (20th St.), and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (Cass St.). The district operates one library at Mill Cove Park (42nd St.).

Notable Residents

Many people such as James Dooley (famous local radio dee-jay), and George Brett (a famous KC celebrity) live in Armourdale.

There is also a radio station, an auto parts store, and some small restaurants located along the riverfront.

The neighborhood’s most notable resident was John O’Leary.
