History

The City of Fairfax was originally platted by a man named George M. Brown in 1872, and the city has gone through several name changes throughout its existence. Originally called Missouri City, it quickly became Brown’s Town after Mr. Brown moved from Virginia to Kansas to realize his dream of starting a town.

The town even went as far as incorporating itself under the name of Fairfax in 1890, but after years of conflict between the city and county, the town changed its name back to Missouri City in 1901. Eventually, in 1933, Missouri City changed its name to Fairfax.

Bushong Elementary School – Rated as one of the top elementary schools in Kansas City, KS, Bushong is located less than three miles from downtown.

Alice Boucher Public Library – This library was built in 2007 and has more than 45,000 books available to check out. It also offers wireless internet access for browsing the web or checking email.

Kansas City, KS Recycling Drop-Off Site – This is the only recycling drop-off site in Kansas City, KS. It accepts paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum for up to 10 items per visit. Large items like tires or fridges are not accepted at this center.

Neighborhood Park – Located less than a mile from downtown, this neighborhood park has a playground and a gazebo. It is accessible by foot or bike.

Kauffman Stadium – Kauffman Stadium is the home field for the Kansas City Royals baseball team. This venue also hosts concerts and other events throughout the year.
