Named the Zoological Park Association of Kansas City, the group raised $130,000 in three years to purchase land on Swope Park for what was originally named “The Zoo.” The zoo first opened its gates on July 1, 1931. That day it housed 24 mammals and 72 birds. It’s famous for its 36-acre African-themed elephant habitat where visitors can ride a train and see African elephants, lions, gorillas, and more.
