Longview Lake

Longview Lake, MO,  is a very popular place for swimming, boating, jet-skiing, picnicking, and fishing. There are boat rentals available at the park as well as a snack bar that serves regular snacks but also has some high-quality food such as pulled-pork sandwiches. Longview Lake is located on US Highway 54 about one mile west of Route 248 or 13 miles west of Warrensburg, Missouri.

The one-mile-long lake was completed in 1959 at a cost of nearly $3 million. The state legislature had approved the construction of Longview Dam to control floods along the Osage River but did not appropriate funds for it until 1954. During construction, Route 54 was rerouted twice around the lake construction site. The state of Missouri acquired 4,166 acres for the lake’s recreation area in 1956. When opened to the public in 1959 under the management of the State Conservation Commission (now known as the Department of Natural Resources), it was Missouri’s largest state park project since Mark Twain National Forest had been established in 1924.

To mark the fortieth anniversary of the Longview Dam and Lake, an impressive stone marker commemorating Longview as a historical site was erected on U.S. 54 near the lake’s entrance.

The marina was added in 1981. In 1990, Longview Lake was designated as a nationally recognized Gold Medal Water Body by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Parks Service.
